The Irish company Aer Rianta International has opened the first-ever duty free shop at airport Shannon in 1947. Today the annual turnover of this business exceeds 60 billion dollars (as of 2014, according to Generation Research).
The first Duty Free shop in Russia has been opened in 1988 in the Sheremetyevo-2 by “Aerofirst” (a joint venture of Irish Aer Rianta and the Russian Aeroflot). Today in Russia more than 200 duty free shops work at the airports and seaports, on airlines, in frontier zones, and this number grows.
The Russian market demonstrates high potential for development of duty-free. The leading global players have come to the market, and today there is an urgent necessity for consolidated approach to the variety of issues in Duty Free and Travel Retail community. For these purposes Eurasian Association of Duty Free was formed in Russia in 2012. In October 2013 Eurasia merged with another active DF association, BORT.
The association is a non-profit union of the largest Duty Free and Travel Retail operators and duty free shop suppliers in the territory of the EEU.
Eurasian Association of Duty Free is open for effective communication and membership to landlords, industry regulators and other non-profit organizations.
